Understanding Foster Care

The demographics of foster care reflect the diversity of our communities. The average age of youth in foster care is 6.33 years old. In terms of race, 46% are White, Non-Hispanic, 21% are Black or African American, 20% are Hispanic or Latino, 8% are of Multiple Race Groups, and 5% are of another race. The breakdown by gender is fairly even, with 49% boys and 51% girls.
